let's look at the four biggest internet of things trends,
The internet of things refers to the
increasing amount of devices that are now connected to the internet and are collecting
data and sharing data,
we see them in our homes in terms of
smart thermostats and smart devices in our offices in our factories,
Ericsson actually predicts that this
year we will have around 29 billion iot devices connected to the internet globally.
So what are some of the key trends
i'm seeing.
1 - EDGE IOT
Edge computing basically means that more
of the computing takes place on the device where the data is collected.
so in smart cameras on smart machines in your wearable devices in your smartphones for me edge computing and iot go hand in hand and more of the processing will be divided between the edge & the cloud.
2 - SECURITY
So iot devices provide access points
to our networks, and to our data.
According to security researchers at
Kaspersky they were 1.5 billion attacks against iot devices during just the
first half of 2021.
we commonly see denial of service attacks,
that basically work by bombarding
systems with connection requests,
causing them to break & possibly
expose data,
or by hijacking compute power from
devices which can can be used to create botnets that attack other systems or to
mine cryptocurrencies.
so there are real challenges around
security however Iot devices can also be used to gather data on network
activity that can be used then to predict and prevent cyberattacks.
so for me security has two sides to
it.
more attack vectors but also using
it to help you protect yourself.
3 - IOT AND HEALTHCARE
Iot and healthcare is another trend where
it is used to collect data to help doctors understand conditions and lifestyles
of patients.
As well as work autonomously to
improve the life the quality of life of users,
which allows doctors to potentially examine
diagnose and treat larger number of patients,
as well as expand health care to
regions where physical access is limited.
4 - IOT IN BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
It will change how we make things
and what we make,
so we will use our iot devices as
part of our smart factories,
where we use them in cobots or co-working
robots in smart and connected machines,
that we can use to predict when they
might be breaking down we for quality control purposes,
but also we're using iot to build
this technology into the products we are manufacturing,
which means we can then use it to monitor
the service of products and even improve the after sales environment,
Iot will have a big impact on supply chains and logistics where we can use it to monitor how things are moving along supply chains.
